Uwang Ahadas, National Living Treasure for Traditional Music

Among the Yakan of Basilan in Mindanao, Instrumental music is given much importance. The kwintangen, a five bossed gongs laid in a row, is used for courtship and celebrations. The agung, a wide-rimmed gong, is used for making important announcements and providing music in connection with social negotiations, events, celebrations, and the life cycle.
Uwang Ahadas, a Yakan of Lamitan, Basilan in Mindanao, was proclaimed a Nationa Living Treasure for his dexterity in playing Yakan musical instruments such as the kwintangan. gabbang (bamboo xylophone), agung, kwintangan kayu (five wooden logs hung horizontally), tuntungan (a long, hanging flat wooden plank above which the mouth of two clay pot resonators are suspended without touching the wood) among others, and for his deep knowledge of the aesthetic possibilities and social contexts of these instruments. In spite of the dimming of his eyesight, he has devoted his life to the teaching of Yakan musical traditions.
